Casey Turner

Hello, and welcome to my first blog post! My name is Casey Turner, and I am a part of the 2026 Summer Workforce Development Internship offered by UME. I will be working with four different mentors across three counties on the Eastern Shore of Maryland throughout this internship. In Talbot County I will be working with Tom Hutson to prepare for the Talbot County Fair, assist with fair activities, and promote the event on social media. In Queen Anne's County I am working with Jenny Rhodes and my main project over the summer will be looking into ways to boost the counties agritourism. I am currently in the research stage of the project, and working towards a decision of the best way to move forward, whether it is a resource toolkit for anyone looking to get started in agritourism, or creating a way for the public to know what agritourism options are in the county to boost public knowledge! Meet the 2026 cohort!

Nine interns have been selected from colleges across Maryland and beyond, including University of Maryland, Salisbury University, University of Maryland Eastern Shore, Penn State, Potomac State College of West Virginia, and North Carolina State University to participate in our 10 week full-time internship program. Meet our interns Madison Thayer - North Carolina State University will be working at the Allegany County Extension Office with Sarah Dawn Llewellyn. This week included various activities, from visiting a local produce auction to assisting in our county 4-H broiler show. After our weekly connection presentation, I felt I was more aware of how I was interacting in conversation and connecting with the people I was around during the week. Our presenter talked to us about the importance of creating an environment in which our audiences feel confident to participate in programs and interact with us. I feel that this is easiest to do when you and the audience are having fun, or enjoying the topics you are teaching about, and this week served as an excellent example of that. Tuesday, I spent half of the day at the Countryside Produce Auction, where I was able to see how local produce, flowers, and plants are sold. After spending some time at the auction, we went to look at a local farmer’s high tunnels containing tomatoes.
